We are running an office open evening at our Edinburgh Office on the 12th February. This is a great opportunity for Students, Teachers and Parents to come along and see the PwC office space, learn more about the opportunities at PwC and meet with some of the Edinburgh team. Attending one of our office-based events will give you the chance to discover more about life at PwC, our apprenticeships, degree programmes and work experience. EMA Info

An EMA ( Education Maintenance Allowance) is a weekly payment of £30 paid directly to eligible students who are continuing in post-compulsory education (i.e. beyond the age of 16). Summer leavers ( those born between 1st March 1998 & 30th September 2001) will now have received a pack inviting them to submit their application. We need to receive the completed application into our office by 30th September – any awards received after this date will not be backdated until the start of term.

Winter leavers , remaining at school who will be eligible for an award from January, will be sent an application form directly by the team in late November. If you need an application form, these are available from the school office, the EMA department ( emas@eastlothian.gov.uk ) or online www.eastlothian.gov.uk/emas

The Scottish Apprenticeship Show

Parents of s4 – s6 students attending the apprenticeships roadshow on Monday 2nd October 2017 will have received a text to alert them that a consent form needs to be returned.

Electronic consent forms have been sent out to those who have email addresses on the school system, if these have not worked or parents do not have an email address, paper copies are available in guidance and a copy is also attached to the information letter in this notice.

All consent forms need to be completed and submitted or returned by 9.00 on Thursday 28th September at the very latest please, early returns would be greatly appreciated.

Viridor Dunbar Energy Recovery Facility (ERF)

Apprenticeship Opportunity
Viridor are looking to recruit a Maintenance Engineering Apprentice for their Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) in Dunbar.
As an engineering apprentice you will be expected to be adaptable to learning new skills and processes and play an active role in ensuring the safe running of the plant.

Apprenticeship Profile
Candidates will work towards SVQ’s at levels 2 & 3.The will also be required to obtain a suitable academic qualification in an engineering discipline to at least National Certificate (NC) level. Candidates will receive comprehensive training at our Training Provider EKGTA at their centre in East Kilbride and at the facility AT Dunbar.

Apprenticeship Criteria
It is preferred that candidates have or expect to gain National 5 Grades in English, Maths, Physics and Craft/Technical subjects at Band C (or above). Higher level qualifications would be an advantage. It is also preferred that they will be literate, numerate with some computing and keyboard skills. Candidates also must have good personal presentation and communications skills.

Information for any students considering applying to Oxford University

Members of the Undergraduate Admissions & Outreach office, academic staff and current students from the University of Oxford will be visiting schools and colleges across Scotland in September 2017, to talk about the University, and to provide advice and encouragement to those considering an application.Please see details below of the activities happening.

Oxford Explained presentations

These sessions are mainly aimed at S5 and S6 students, but can also be helpful for younger years considering Oxford. We warmly encourage parents to attend too.

The Oxford Explained presentation covers all aspects of student life and the admissions process for Oxford, including course choice, the college system, tutorial teaching, admissions tests and interviews. We aim to leave students feeling much better informed about what applying to, and studying at, Oxford would involve, as well as to break down any misconceptions about Oxford that might deter students from making an application. The sessions will be delivered by Oxford Undergraduate Admissions & Outreach office staff supported by current students who will share their experiences.

Interview Workshops

These sessions are suitable for S6 students who are planning on making an application to Oxford or Cambridge for 2018 (or deferred to 2019) entry and their teachers.

The Interview Workshop comprises a presentation focusing on what students should expect from and how to prepare for Oxford or Cambridge interviews, followed by an interactive session where students will have an opportunity to engage with a series of sample interview questions in groups. The sessions will be delivered by both Oxford and Cambridge staff, academic tutors from both universities as well as current students.
