The ACB with Honora Lee by Kate De Goldi

December 14th, 2016 · 1 Comment · Reviews, UKLA

acbwithhonoraleePerry has a unique way of looking at the world. When she realises that her grandmother’s memory for language is failing, she works on a dictionary of life at the Santa Lucia retirement home. Kate De Goldi handles difficult material with a lightness which makes it accessible but never trivial. This remarkable book is moving, original and very funny.

I thought this book was great. It was really enjoyable to read all about a family and different friendships. The main character was a girl called Perry. Perry visits her Gran in Santa Lucia Care Home every Thursday. Perry’s Gran, Honora Lee, is really interested in alphabet books for young children. Perry decides to make an ABC book about life in Santa Lucia care home with her. There are lots of funny stories about what all the old people in the care home get up to. The book is also really sad at times. I really liked how it made me feel. The book also reminded me of visiting my Great Gran in a care home. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. ‘One of the best books I’ve ever read.’
