European Day of Languages 26 September

The Modern Languages Department has recently been celebrating the European Day of Languages.  This is an annual event on September 26th where people all over Europe celebrate the fact that so many languages are spoken in Europe.  Pupils took part in games and quizzes in their ML classrooms and some subjects around the school were taught in French and Spanish that week. Well done Miss Beggs and Miss Brockway! The canteen menu on the Day of Languages was translated into many different languages and pupils made posters of these to display in the canteen. Teachers wrote messages about what learning languages meant for them and this display can be viewed in the main entrance. It was lovely to see such a whole school effort!

Every S1 pupil has written a letter in French to a member of staff and teachers have been asked to reply to that pupil in any language they know.  Pupils are eagerly awaiting their reply and are desperate to find out who their letter has ended up with. Well done to S1 for producing such beautiful letter!

Elspeth Nicol 2W1- winner of Word Wizard in French!

On Friday, 30th May, Elspeth Nicol, 2W1, won 1st Prize in the National Modern Languages Spelling Competition which took place at the Scottish Parliament.  The competition was organised by Scotland’s National Centre for Languages (Strathclyde University) in partnership with St Andrew’s University. She was awarded a Trophy for the school, a Certificate and an individual glass shield award.

She has been working hard for months to learn how to pronounce and spell 225 words in the target language (French).  This is an incredible achievement for her to win such a competition beating all other contestants from all around Scotland!!!  Huge congratulations go to her and to Ms Gancheva who was her coach!!  Very impressive!!!!

European Day of Languages

Every year on 26 September, the Modern Languages department is celebrating the European Day of Languages.

This year, the S1 pupils prepared postcards in French for all the teachers at Ross High. The aim is for the teachers to reply in any foreign language that they know and answer the questions that the pupils have asked them!

Also, miss Kerr’s Enterprising Languages class filmed 7 teachers in the school who spoke in a foreign language. The S2- S4 pupils were then to guess what languages were spoken in the video. Well done to miss Kerr’s class for making this brilliant video!

Salut!

Welcome to the Modern Languages Department’s website. We are very pleased to be able to launch it and we hope you will find all the information useful.

A bientôt!
