Nearly time to go ……

  • Note that our departure time has changed to 8pm.  This is because the coach company want extra time in case there are roadworks en route.  Please therefore be at school at 7.30pm to give us time to put our luggage in the hold.
  • Make sure you have a bag/rucksack with all you need for the journey.  We do not get to the Château until late afternoon the next day so you will need to bring water/food/pillow/medication with you.  The coach will stop at service stations along the way so you can also buy stuff there although usually it is expensive.  Bring DVDs too if you want – it will be a long journey……
  • NO juice or chewing gum is allowed on the coach.  Our coach company is JH Coaches of Durham.  It’s an executive coach with leather seats and DVD player/screens.  You can see our very coach if you go on their website and look at the 55 seater Executive Coach.
  • The boat we shall go on is Brittany Ferries’ Mont St Michel – check out what it has on board!  There is even a cinema – tickets £5.  Onboard you can spend both euros and pounds.  We depart at 0815 and arrive at 1500 (1 hour time difference).  In the past we have been allocated a big room so we can all be together and where you can leave your stuff if you want to explore.
  • Please make sure that you have your euros spending money in an envelope with your name on the front.  Your group leader will look after you money when we are away.
  • At the Château you need to bring soap, towel, hairdryer, swimming stuff (there is a heated outside pool) and you also need a ‘clean change of footwear’ for inside the building – flipflops?
  • Drinks at the Château cost 2 euros.  We will be doing a supermarket shop in Bayeux the day after we arrive so you will be able to buy drinks/snacks there too.

Hoodies are in my room – to be collected at any time.  Please pay asap if you  have not yet done so.  Think that is it for now but keep checking the school website to see if there are further updates.    A bientôt!


We have heard from the Travel Company that we cannot now visit the Stade de France due to the Euros being on.  We are so disappointed… instead we have booked the tourist train to take us from the Moulin Rouge to Sacré Coeur to do a tour of this area.  We have done this in the past and some pupils thought it was the best part of the trip!

There are a few pupils who have not yet handed in their signed Behaviour Contracts – please do so asap!

Sample hoodies

Sample hoodies of all sizes are now in my room.  Please come to try on and place order over the next few days.  I can confirm that the cost will be £12.95 each.  Payment can be made online or at school office.  Please make sure you put Normandy Hoodies as your reference.
Thanks to everyone for coming to the Parents’ Night last night and handing in passports/EHIC cards/signed behaviour contracts.  If anyone still has to hand these in, please do so asap.

Parents’ Night

We shall hold a Parents’ Night for the trip on Tuesday 26 April at 5pm in the Assembly Hall.  Hopefully we can answer any last minute questions you may have and you will be able to meet the staff going on the trip.  In the meantime could you please ensure that all pupils have a passport and up-to-date EHIC card which is free and available from

In light of the recent terrorist attacks in Europe and obvious safety concerns of parents Mr Reynolds will attend the meeting.  He will chair discussions around the anxieties we all share regards safety in light of these recent attacks.  In the meantime he will liaise with the other ELC secondary schools and the ELC Education Department and seek any advice they may have.

Normandy-Paris 2016: Final payment and order of hoodies!

Dear all,

The last payment is due before the Easter holidays. All pupils should then have paid £600. If you have any problems to make the payment deadline, speak to Mrs Shanley ASAP.

Last Thursday at break, a meeting took place about ordering hoodies for the trip. Make sure to have a think about logo and colour as there will be a new meeting just before the Easter holidays in Mrs Shanley’s room to decide on these. The cost will be in the region of £21. The date of the meeting will be in the Pupil DIS very soon.

Payment reminder

Normandy/Paris Trip 2016

A reminder that the next payment is due this week (£100 for S2-4 and £150 for S1).  Please pay at the office at break or registration.  If you have any difficulties meeting making this payment, please see me.

Normandy-Paris 2016

This is a 2 centre trip.  For the first few days we shall be based in an old Château in the heart of the Normandy countryside.  From here we shall explore the old medieval town of Bayeux and visit the weekly market.  We shall also visit the seaside town of Arromanches, one of the most important towns of the D-Day landings.  We shall go to the 360 degree cinema there which gives a unique experience of how the D-Day landings unfolded then onto see a ‘Batterie’ at Longues sur Mer, which is an example of defence battery built by the Germans to defend the coast of France.  We shall also visit the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach which honours American troops who died in Europe in WW2 and we shall then see a stark contrast between this beautiful, open land and the German Cemetery, which is dark and dismal.

We then depart for Paris, visiting the Stade de France en route.  This is the national stadium and the largest in the country.  Our tour will include going into the changing rooms, walking through the tunnel and seeing behind the scenes.  We shall then drive to our Disneyland Hotel.  The next day we shall spend sightseeing in Paris including going on a boat trip on the famous Bateaux Mouches on the River Seine, going upTour Montparnasse – 59 floors and 210m high, driving up and down the Champs Elysées and going round l’Arc de Triomphe.  On the last day we shall spend a full day at Disneyland.    It promises to be an action packed fun week……… and there are still some places available to come with us!

The total cost for all of the above is £600 to be paid in instalments.

S2 Languages Event- 22 January 2015

The Modern Languages had a Languages Event on 22 January 2015 for the current S2 pupils. We were fortunate to have 4 fantastic and inspiring workshops and engaging speakers in our department.

Workshop 1- SCILT speaker Christian Beart was talking about the fact that English is not enough and why languages should be for all.

Workshop 2- Kayt Wright was talking about her own language experiences of working on super yachts all over the world. A very impressive lifestyle thanks to her languages! Emma Hand is a current language student at Edinburgh University and she shared her positive experiences about her gap year in Germany and Spain and about being a language student.

Workshop 3- Translators Heather Stacy and Fiona Paterson discussed their passion for languages and how they ended up being freelance translators in many different languages. They decide their working hours and what work they want to do as they are their own bosses!

Workshop 4- Tom White is a former Ross High pupil who has dedicated his whole life to make people realise the importance of learning a language and his passion is the French language. He is now part of the Franco-Scottish Alliance and he has been recognised by the French President for his important work in French.

We are sure the pupils really enjoyed them as much as the ML staff did and that the workshops made the pupils realise the importance of learning a language or languages for their future!
