S4/5/6 Curriculum

Pupils can do French and/or Spanish at National 3/4/5, Higher and Advanced Higher levels. The main contexts are Society, Learning, Employability and Culture.

 

ASSESSMENTS

National 3: pupils will be assessed internally in all four skills : listening, reading, speaking and writing. Pupils who have completed National 3 will be able to study National 4.

National 4: pupils will be assessed internally in all four skills : listening, reading, speaking and writing. There will also be an Added Value on one of the themes. Pupils who have completed National 4 will be able to study National 5.

National 5: pupils will be assessed externally in three skills : listening, reading and writing. The Performance unit will be assessed internally and the Writing assignment will be produced internally but externally marked. The total mark for the National 5 course is 120 marks.

Performance Talking (6-8 minutes) is both a presentation and a conversation covering at least two of the contexts (30 marks)

Paper I (1hr30) Reading (30 marks)

Paper II (30 mins) Listening (30 marks)

Paper III (1hr30) Writing a job application (15 marks).

Pupils who have completed National 5 will be able to study Higher.

 

Higher: pupils will be assessed in all four skills. The total mark for the Higher course  is 120 marks and each skill is worth 25%.

In class:

Performance Talking (8-10minutes) is a recorded conversation and it has to cover at least two of the contexts (30 marks)

Writing Assignment (200-250 words) is produced internally but externally marked. ( 20 marks)

On the day of the exam:

Paper I (2 hours): Reading/ Translation (30 marks) and Directed Writing (150-180 words and worth 20 marks)

Paper II (30 mins): Listening (20marks)

Pupils who have completed Higher will be able to study Advanced Higher.

Advanced Higher: pupils will be assessed externally in all four skills: listening, reading, talking and writing. Pupils are also undertaking a Literature project- portfolio based which is written in English analysing a French or a Spanish book. The total mark for the Advanced Higher course is 200 marks.

Talking Performance (50 marks) is conducted by a visiting assessor.

The Portfolio (30 marks) externally marked (1200-1500 words).
