Parents’ Night

Posted by Mrs Scott on March 24, 2016

We shall hold a Parents’ Night for the trip on Tuesday 26 April at 5pm in the Assembly Hall.  Hopefully we can answer any last minute questions you may have and you will be able to meet the staff going on the trip.  In the meantime could you please ensure that all pupils have a passport and up-to-date EHIC card which is free and available from https://www.gov.uk/europeanhealthinsurancecard.

In light of the recent terrorist attacks in Europe and obvious safety concerns of parents Mr Reynolds will attend the meeting.  He will chair discussions around the anxieties we all share regards safety in light of these recent attacks.  In the meantime he will liaise with the other ELC secondary schools and the ELC Education Department and seek any advice they may have.

If you have any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

This is a 2 centre trip.  For the first few days we shall be based in an old Château in the heart of the Normandy countryside.  From here we shall explore the old medieval town of Bayeux and visit the weekly market.  We shall also visit the seaside town of Arromanches, one of the most important towns of the D-Day landings.  We shall go to the 360 degree cinema there which gives a unique experience of how the D-Day landings unfolded then onto see a ‘Batterie’ at Longues sur Mer, which is an example of defence battery built by the Germans to defend the coast of France.  We shall also visit the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach which honours American troops who died in Europe in WW2 and we shall then see a stark contrast between this beautiful, open land and the German Cemetery, which is dark and dismal.

We then depart for Paris, visiting the Stade de France en route.  This is the national stadium and the largest in the country.  Our tour will include going into the changing rooms, walking through the tunnel and seeing behind the scenes.  We shall then drive to our Disneyland Hotel.  The next day we shall spend sightseeing in Paris including going on a boat trip on the famous Bateaux Mouches on the River Seine, going upTour Montparnasse – 59 floors and 210m high, driving up and down the Champs Elysées and going round l’Arc de Triomphe.  On the last day we shall spend a full day at Disneyland.    It promises to be an action packed fun week……… and there are still some places available to come with us!

The total cost for all of the above is £600 to be paid in instalments.

If you are interested in this trip please come and see either Mrs Shanley or Mrs Scott in the Modern Languages Department!

Vive La France!!!

Day 6 (sixième jour)

Posted by hshanley on July 3, 2014

Everybody managed to get up, packed, load cases onto coach and have breakfast before 9 am.  Phew!!!  We got the shuttlebus into Disneyland so we were there for the Park opening.  We firstly headed to the Castle for a team photo before all going our separate ways.  Our tickets were for both the Studios and the Park so there were plenty rides to choose from.  Only thing was,  being in the middle of the tourist season, the waiting times for some rides were so long.

We all met up at 6pm to head back to our coach and go to Val d’Europe for something to eat.  We never had much time as our ferry crossing was at 11.30pm.  Jim, our driver, gave us a deadline of 20 mins to grab something to eat and be back onto the coach!!!  Most seem to head to Mcdonalds but some went to the huge supermarket to buy provisions for the journey…. It was like Supermarket Sweep!!!!  However, we made it and then travelled to Calais watching several episodes of Friends….

At Calais we all had to get out of the coach and go through passport control at huge speed to catch our ferry -only to find the ferry was delayed!  Not only that but the ‘big’ ferry had broken down and they were putting everybody onto 2 smaller ferries.  We were not the chosen ones though and got put on the next ferry at 00.30 hours.  Time passed quite quickly though as we heard tales of a stowaway on the axle of the truck next to us and watched the police take the man away…..

We made good time from Dover back to school.  We had to go via Birmingham to pick up our feeder driver and got back to school at 11.30 am – tired but with great memories of a brilliant trip.

Party leaders would like to thank pupils for their outstanding behaviour, wonderful time-keeping and all the laughs.  Jim (driver) wants to know if we are going back next year as he wants to join us!!!  He still cannot believe that he was asked by some pupils if he was on holiday and if he was getting paid to take us around!!!!  Photos will appear on the blog over the next few days so watch this space

Thank you all and have a great summer!!!!

Day 5 (5eme jour)

Posted by Mrs Scott on July 1, 2014

After our lovely buffet breakfast at the hotel we headed into the centre of Paris and Tour Montparnasse. This building, which is the tallest one in France, has got 56 floors and the fastest lifts in Europe. Not everybody were happy travellers in the lifts… The views of Paris were amazing and the interactive activities brought the city to life. The panoramic platform was reached by stairs and it was worth the climb.

Jim- our driver, then took us on our surprise tour past le Louvre, les Champs Elysées, L’Arc de Triomphe before heading to Hard Rock Cafe Paris.  Due to traffic it took us an hour to cover 2 miles. So many of the pupils said this was the best meal of the trip which they devoured while listening to the songs they had chosen. A quick visit to the gift shop was obviously necessary….

Next stop was the Moulin Rouge to catch Le Petit Train de Montmartre which took us to the famous Sacre Coeur cathedral. We took some lovely group photos outside before going inside the beautiful cathedral. We had a quick wander about the bohemian artists’ quarters in la Place du Tertre.

Our restaurant for our dinner was only a 10 mins walk away where we enjoyed turkey escalope with chips and a gorgeous ice cream for dessert.

Back at the Disney hotel the pupils had a choice of either staying in or going to the Disney village for some late night shopping.  A very tiring day …. and know we have to get up early tomorrow morning to pack, load our cases onto the coach before having breakfast and heading to Disneyland.  Yippee!!

We are all excited about our visit to Disneyland tomorrow!!!

Day 4 (4eme jour)

Posted by Mrs Scott on June 30, 2014

We had a very early start- 6 am wake up call and we left the chateau with heavy hearts and bags for some… to Paris. When leaving the grounds of the chateau we had to drive over a pink toilet roll which somehow had escaped James’s suitcase. We still don’t know how!!

After a very quick journey to Paris we were suddenly in the midst of the city. Our first adventure was going a half lap around l’Arc de Triomphe , with a full lap promised tomorrow. The driving is crazy and we stayed well outside the blue line!!!

We then enjoyed our packed lunches under the Eiffel Tower, where many unusual selfies were taken.

Our final stop in Paris was les bateaux mouches, where we enjoyed the cruise down the Seine. Some of the highlights were Notre Dame, Musee d’Orsay, the Eiffel Tower and all the bridges covered in padlocks. The sun was shining and lots of pictures were taken.

Before our arrival at the hotel we stopped at a massive shopping mall and the pupils had a chance to do some shopping although some headed straight to McDonald’s, which they have been dreaming of for days!

Our Disney hotel is beautiful and our buffet dinner was delicious. So many dishes to try and they were all yummy!

Most pupils then headed to the Disney village to check out the shops and to do some more shopping.

We are looking forward to our second full day in Paris and it will be our busiest day of the trip!

A bientot!
