If I Were Provost… a competition for the Year of Young People

Young people in East Lothian are being asked to get creative and share their ideas on how to make the county a better place for young people, for a competition held as part of the Year of Young People.

The council has launched If I Were Provost – a competition that asks young people what would they do if they were ‘in charge’, how they would improve life for young people in the region, what new policies they might introduce and why.

You may wish to convey your ideas in:

  • A short story
  • A letter to our Provost John McMillan
  • A poem
  • A diary entry or blog
  • A graphic comic strip
  • Or any creative approach that you think is best!

There are two categories:

  • category 1 (ages 8 – 13)
  • category 2 (ages 14 – 18).

One winner from each category will be invited to act as a Young Provost alongside Provost John McMillan at a number of events throughout 2018. The winners will also receive a goody bag of gifts from East Lothian tourist attractions. The winning entries, plus a selection of entries received, will be on display at libraries throughout the county during the summer of 2018.

For more information, go to www.eastlothian.gov.uk/provostcompetition

The closing date for entries is Friday 11 May 2018.

Consultation on the Draft School Session Dates 2019/2020

The consultation on School Session Dates for 2019/2020 will be open on the Council’s Consultation Hub from Tuesday 27 March 2018 until Friday 4 May 2018.  The consultation on the draft school session dates for 2019/2020 is to seek stakeholder views.  Our neighbouring authorities, City of Edinburgh Council and Midlothian Council have set, or are in the process of setting, their session dates and these dates are available on the respective websites.  The East Lothian Council draft dates for 2019/2020 have taken cognises of our neighbouring authority dates and very much align with City of Edinburgh Council dates.

A copy of the draft dates are attached.

School Extension – Proposed Plans Consultation Evening

You may be aware that Ross High School is due to increase in pupil number over the next few years.

To ensure we have the space and facilities to continue to deliver a high quality of learning and teaching a school extension is planned.

The extension work is currently scheduled to start in July 2019 and so we would like to invite you to come along to view the proposed drawings.  All feedback and questions on the night will be welcomed.

I will go through the drawings and rationale behind them on Tuesday 27th March from 7-8pm in the Main Hall.  All parents and carers are welcome to attend.

This invitation is also open to parents and carers of our catchment primary schools.

The Parent Council meeting, scheduled for the same night, will continue afterwards from 8-9pm.

I hope to see you there.

Mr Reynolds

Is your child eligible for free school meals, and if so, have you registered?

Is your child eligible for free school meals, and if so, have you registered?

Schools receive additional funding of £1,200 from the Scottish Government for every pupil in P1 to S3 who is registered for free school meals. This is called Pupil Equity Funding, and schools use this additional money to help fund a wide range of initiatives to support achievement and provide the best possible opportunities for children’s learning.

How do I know if my child is eligible for free school meals?

Please visit our website www.eastlothian.gov.uk  to check your eligibility and download an application form.

Even if your child does not wish to take up the option of having a free school meal every day, we would encourage you to register so that your child’s school will receive the Pupil Equity Funding allowance to support their learning.
