Election Fever Sweeps Through Saltoun!

The P3-7 Saltoun Election will take place on Wednesday 18th May 2011. Manifestos and Posters have gone home in pupil’s school bags and they will be out in the playground campaigning for YOUR vote. Please pop in on Wednesday 8:50 – 9:30am to register your vote. Every vote counts.

There are 6 parties:

Kids Choice, Minions, Mercury, The Scots, SPP and Galaxy.

Election Day

As part of P3/4/5/6/7’s  social studies topic ‘The Scottish Parliament’, we visited Saltoun village hall today. It is election day and our class wanted to see how to vote and the process that you go through. A very kind lady and gentleman let us watch as they voted and showed us which boxes to put each of the 3 ballot papers in. Then the people who were working in the hall told us what happens to the ballot boxes next. We were very lucky to be allowed in to the hall and we learned lots!

Lively Leaders

Today P5/6/7 launched their new lunch time Active Playgrounds scheme by having a ‘Through the Ages’ playdate. Pupils spent the morning learning and playing different games from years gone by. The P5/6/7 now titled ‘Lively Leaders’ lead the session and could be seen in their self-designed yellow t-shirts. The game ‘Postman’s Knock’ was a big hit with everyone (Miss Brown’s favourite too!). The Lively Leaders will now led playground games every Monday and Thursday at lunch time. We can’t wait to see the other games that they are going to teach us!

River Trip

On Thursday P3-7 visited the River Tyne as part of their Water/Rivers topic. They split into 3 groups: 1 group canoed up the river with Martyn looking at the effects of erosion and deposition, 1 group worked with Richard to find out the depth and speed of the river and the last group worked with Leigh to find out what kind of species were living in the river. It was great to see all of the things we have been learning about in the classroom. Everyone had a great time and learned lots! We were also very lucky that the sun was shining for us! A big thank you to Martyn, Leigh and Richard for all of their help and expertise. Also a big thank you to Magi Mitchell who came along to help us 🙂 Take a look at our photos from the day.

World Maths Day

On Tuesday 1st March it is World Maths Day. P3-7 are taking part in a mental maths challenge against other children around the world.  Each game lasts for 60 seconds and pupils can play up to 100 games, earning points for their personal tally.  Pupils can play beyond 100 games during the event, but points will only count to the World Maths Day Mathometer, not their personal point score.  The students who answer the most questions correctly will appear on the Hall of Fame.  There are 5 levels of play, 20 games on each level. All pupils have a login and password and we have been practising, before the big day, in the classroom. Pupils can also practice these challenges at home before Tuesday. The website address is www.worldmathsday.com I hope to see the results on the website increasing every day! Have Fun!

Badminton Players

Today P3-7 were very lucky to take part in a badminton taster session. Mrs Black came to Saltoun and taught us some of the skills in badminton. We had great fun in the session and can’t wait to play again. Miss Brown has said that we can play some badminton in our P.E lessons. We would like to thank Mrs Black for coming along. 🙂

Book Party

Today P3 hosted a book party in the village hall. The party had a Fantastic Mr Fox theme and we made up activities for it. We also prepared the food for our animal feast! We invited 7 other schools from the Tranent cluster. We prepared a speech and greeted the 67 other children who all came wearing animal masks. There were two activities – fox facts then pin the tail on the fox and book circle discussions. After that we all had a feast. We had a great afternoon and hope everyone else did too. Below are some photos of the event.

Star Writers!

We have lots of talented writers in P3-7. This week we have been writing a personal account of our ‘Snow Days’. Our Star Writer this week was Gabriel who wrote a very engaging, descriptive story. Below is his story for your enjoyment…..

“Schools Out!”

On Monday the 29th of November school was off. “Yipee” I shouted. I got out of bed sleepily and went to get breakfast. As usual I had weetabix. Then I went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth for 2 minutes with my horrible pink toothbrush that my brother chose for me at Tesco! After that I went to my clothes cupboard and fished out my warmest clothes. I had 5 layers on, no wonder I was sweaty!

I went outside. I couldn’t resist turning a big pile of snow into a snowslide. Next me and Reuben had a snowball fight. BANG, THWACK, CLOUT! Then I found some untouched snow and made a snow angel. I made a “swish, swish, swish” sound.

By this time I was hungry so I went inside and had some soup that warmed me up!

Next me, Reuben and Dad went sledging. I brought my snowboard with me. Next thing I was zooming down the hill with the breeze in my hair. After a while me and my snowboard became a sort of celebrity because everybody wanted a go! So I had to rush home to escape the pleading crowds!

When I got in I had some tea. THen I played the wii until 8pm. Next I watched my favourite quiz programme, University Challenge. Then I put on my pjs and went to bed. “zzzz!”
