As part of National School Sport Week, Sanderson’s Wynd Primary school hosted a P4 Tranent Cluster ‘Olympic Festival’ on 7th June. Pupils from the cluster primaries were split into 18 countries for the afternoon, which began with a large outdoor picnic on the grass. This fun event kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony in the sun, where countries waving their flags were piped into the ‘stadium’ by parent, Grant Walker. Children participated in 9 events, including a paralympic sport, ranging from boccia, basketball and 100m sprint to hockey, hammerthrow and the luge! Luckily, the good weather held out throughout the afternoon. There was a lovely atmosphere as pupils from 7 primaries mixed and competed against a different country at each event. At the closing ceremony, the winning countries were awarded their medals on the podium, by local sporting heroes. Romania received Bronze, Switzerland took Silver and ??Cuba were awarded the Gold medals. Thank you to Lesley and Adam(from Active Schools) and all staff, parents and volunteers who helped to make this cluster event such a huge success. Now for 2012!
