Children in Need

Will you be a modern day super hero like a nurse or a firefighter? Or will you stick to a traditional superhero like Superman or Wonderwoman? This Friday pupils and staff at Sanderson’s Wynd will be dressing as superheroes to raise money for Children in Need.

our_new_logoWe have been learning about the United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child, which is like another superhero for children! There are several articles of the UNCRC that relate to work programmes funded by Children in Need money. As we will be learning about Children in Need at assembly today, could each class have a look at the 42 articles and post in a comment which ones you think relate to Children in Need?

George Kerevan Visits Sanderson’s Wynd

East Lothian  MP George Kerevan visited our school today in order to help us take part in Send My Friend’s Day of Action. He came to speak with pupils who are concerned about 58 million children missing out on an education. Pupils in Primary 3-7 made mini politicians to express their thoughts about the situation. Mr, Kerevan came to collect more than 200 paper politicians with messages from pupils. He is going to share our messages at Westminster. Pupils in Primary 4 also wrote a letter to the Prime Minister to accompany the mini politicians. When Mr. Kerevan brings our paper politicians back to Sanderson’s Wynd after the summer, we are going to post them to leaders all over the world.

We went Hack to the Future

On Friday a small group of pupils were invited to attend Hack to the Future, part of the Jam Packed weekend being hosted a Knox Academy. Sarah, Rebecca, Sam, Dylan, Jonah, Aaron, Aimee, Jack, Ruby, Kira and Emma worked in pairs to improve the Marble Racer game on Scratch by editing the sprite, the background and the velocity of the sprite. Then they got a chance to hack Minecraft to input their own message into the game! It was a fun-filled morning for everyone who attended. Thank you, Mr. Walker, for coming along to help!

Lennox Author Award

Lennox Award ceremony

We were delighted to host the 2015 Lennox Author Award  last week. On the 13th of May children from Cockenzie, West Barns, Saltoun, Dunbar, Law and Sanderson’s Wynd primary schools came together to share their ideas about books they had read by this year’s authors. We enjoyed drama, book reviews, a Powerpoint, animations and a Scratch animated quiz all put together by some very talented young people. There was a Question and Answer session with the authors organised by pupils from Law Primary.

Authors Paul Dowswell and Marcia Williams attended the event and were impressed by the children’s presentations. Voting to decide the winner of the Lennox Award was very close this year and every vote counted. We were pleased to find out that Marcia Williams won the well-deserved award for 2015, but to us all of the authors are winners as we have enjoyed fantastic books from them all!

The book review competition was also very close and we were pleased to find out that Euan Thornton had won! As his prize he will choose an author to visit the school! Congratulaltions to Euan and well done to everyone who submitted a book review this year. You can see them all here. (Scroll up the page to read them all.)

Holiday Reading

Teachers met today at school to discuss (among other things) BOOKS! We shared some of our favourites which are listed below. If you are looking for something to read over the holidays, why not stop by the library and borrow one of these?

All of these books are on Accelerated Reader. You can check their levels here on AR Bookfinder UK.

Millionaires’ Club

Today we held our very  first Purple Tea Party to celebrate the hard work and exceptional effort of our Accelerated Reader Millionaires.

Euan Thornton, Aaron Shearer and Benjamin Taylor from Primary 5

Finlay Giles and Zoe Watson from Primary 4

Euan, Finlay and Jonah are actually Double Millionaires!

Millionaires Tea Party

This afternoon our millionaire readers were treated to a lovely spread of pizza, purple grapes, blueberries, Millionaire shortbread, and fairy cakes to celebrate their very special achievement! They will be receiving our new SWPS Millionaire badges very soon.

Who will be our next millionaire? Could it be you?

Primary 4 Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth

On Monday pupils from P4p visited the Townhouse in Haddington to help raise the Commonwealth flag. They listened to the Queen’s message delivered by Michael Williams MBE, Lord-Lieutenant of East Lothian. Afterwards we displayed the Commonwealth flag board game we had made in class and enjoyed some delicious scones! It was a fun morning out representing our school.

These are some of the flags we  learned about. Can you identify them? If so, leave a comment below.

Accelerated Reader Success

Well done to all pupils who are using Accelerated Reader regularly. We set you a goal of 30 million words by yesterday, the 19th of December. You reached 31,878,562 words. What an incredible achievement! Well done to all you.

Two pupils in our school have already become word millionaires themselves, which means that they have each read a million words since the start of the school session in August. Our two millionaires are: Euan Thornton in P5/6 and Finlay Giles inn P4P. Well done to you both! We are so proud of you!

Earth, Wind and Fire: the Book YOU Write

Some of our pupils have been reading Earth, Wind and Fire, a book that is being published monthly chapter by chapter on this website:

The Book You Write

A project of the Ross Rocks Reading initiative, it is such an exciting story and we love contributing our ideas for the author to use in the next chapter! You can find it here:  http://thebookyouwrite.blogspot.nl/ .

We can’t wait to find out what happens in Chapter 3!

583 books read

Update from Tuesday, 16.9.2014:

3, 891, 644 words read

455 books read

Pupils in Primary 4 to Primary 7 have begun using the Accelerated Reader programme to encourage the practice of reading daily. An informational leaflet will be sent home this week to help explain the programme and answer any questions you may have about it.

It is possible through the use of A.R. to keep track of the number of books we read as a school and even the number of words we read! We have found that children enjoy knowing how many books and words they are reading.

We have set pupils a challenge to read 10 million words in P4-7 before the October break. During the first three full weeks of this session, pupils have read an amazing total of 3,136,210 words! That is a total 408 books.

Will they manage 7 million more before the October break? Check back here to find out.
