This term the children have enjoyed a very successful topic on The Rainforest. Some of the activities we took part in included a trip to Butterdean Wood; a visit from the Waste Officer to talk about Composting; making a 3-d Rainforest; adopting a sloth; creating a Global Warming powerpoint presentation; area, perimeter, measurement and volume; all kinds of graphs; making information leaflets and posters etc. We also had a Recycling challenge where each of the children was to produce something recycled from home – the ideas were impressive and now are displayed in our front hall for everyone to see.

We used a BBC website to create our own pop group, and discussed their identity, then used this information to choose a name for our group, the name of their first single, and then make a CD label and stuck then onto old CDs. We think they look pretty cool!
This term, in particular, the children at St. Mary’s have been very busy keeping healthy! As well as activities within the classes, first thing in the morning the whole school has been taking part in daily warm-up sessions outside, led by the teachers. Some of the activities have included games, learning dances, and walks around our local area. It has been a lovely opportunity for all the children be together, and a great start to each day.
Motivated by these sessions, P5/6 helped to organise the Tesco Great School Fun Run for all the children from P1-7. They made leaflets, badges and certificates in ICT, wrote letters, created banners and did mini presentations to each class to tell them about the Fun Run.
We were very lucky to have great weather on the 14th June, when our run took place. Most of the children ran much further than the 2 km originally planned, and it was super to see some of the older children giving encouragement to the younger ones by running alongside them. We even had some parents and family members who got into the spirit of things and joined in as well!
There was definitely a feeling of achievement, and we finished off the celebrations with an ice lolly.
A big thank you to all the Mums who helped on the day.
As the end of term was approaching, P5/6 decided to host an exhibition about WWII! We invited all our friends and families to come and join the fun!
We have been enthusiastically preparing in our groups, planning our stations and creating our own resources to present an aspect of WWII we have found exciting and enjoyed learning about.
Visitors were invited to listen to presentations on children of the war, taste cakes made with rations, take an evacuee quiz and even sign up to the RAF at Jack’s air-field! (We got enough signatures for a full squadron!)
Emma, Chloe and Paulina even budgeted and shopped for our refreshment stand!
We all agreed it was a fantastic success and received fabulous feedback from everyone!
