Eco-Committee 2011-2012 and Switch Off Fortnight

The new Eco-Committee for 2011-2012 have been working away quietly since last September. They have been encouraging everyone in the school to be more aware of the energy we waste;leaving electrical lights and equipment switched on or on stand-by. During Switch Off Fortnight the committee members found that many teachers and classes forgot to switch off lights, computers and projectors when they were not being used. A reminder was given to all staff and pupils during assembly. Primary 2 and Miss McKay were congratulated for being the best class at switching off and everyone in the class was given a sticker!!!! Well done Primary 2.

Clean water for Haiti

Just after the Easter holidays the Eco committee organised a charity fund raising event. Any money raised was to be sent to SCIAF to help with their efforts to help the people of Haiti who are still recovering from the terrible earthquake that devastated the country last year. By making a circle of small change round a map of Haiti in the School Hall the pupils of St. Martin’s managed to raise £130 to sent to Haiti to help the people there obtain clean water. WELL DONE TO EVERYONE IN THE SCHOOL as this now takes us a step closer to obtaining The Silver Award for Eco Schools. We even made the papers as this was reported in the Courier. We have also received a letter from Fiona O’Donnell our MP to congratulate us on our charity fund raising.

Litter Campaign -Competition

Come on everybody! Let’s be a litter-free school! Enter the Eco-committee’s great competition this week and help to make our school a better place.
Primary 1/2/3/4 you are asked to draw two pictures. One of a playground covered in litter & one of a litter-free playground. Primary 5/6/7 you are challenged to think up a new slogan to encourage the whole school to stop dropping litter.
The Eco- Committee will collect the entries on Wednesday, 30th March so that they can then pick a winner from each class. Great prizes can be won.

Eco Committee 2010 – 2011

Our new Eco – committee is up and running! There are eight very keen pupil members who hope to lead the school towards a Silver Award this session. We have had two meetings already and have completed a review of our school so our next task is to put together our action plan. Look out for any updated news on our noticeboard in the corridor.
