Primary two have settled back into class and are working hard. They have started a new IDEA (topic) which is all about a character called Katie Morag. Katie Morag stories are written by Mairi Hedderwick and are set on a fictional island called Struay (loosely based on the real island of Coll). This IDEA will look at Literacy and English, Social Studies and Health and Wellbeing. We have made tartan patterns, drawn Katie Morag and written a character study.
In Sciences we have made a mind map of things which use electricity
In Literacy and English we have been practising the sounds ai and ay and magic ‘e’.
In Scottish dancing we have been learning new steps. It was fantastic fun.
Nicole and Lewis W helped to write this news.
Friday 26th November
This week has been an extremely creative one for primary two. They have worked hard to make gorgeous winter tree pictures and fabulous snowmen for which they designed hats. Stories were written using a poem “When all the world is white with snow I…………” .
Our first lunch time fitness session for primary two was a success. I am looking forward to Monday when the second group can come along.
On Friday primary 2 were invited along to see the primary 3,4,4/5 and 5 animal parade. It was great to see the effort put in by all the children. The costumes and masks were fantastic!

Primary two were very excited today to have a dress down day. Thank you to everyone who made a contribution to Children in Need.
In music with the specialist this week the children have started to learn songs for the Nativity story. They sang beautifully and were very good at learning the words.
Dancing this week was also terrific. Twenty six primary two children all keen to be snowflakes and disappointed that the lesson had to end. I look forward to dancing next week.
As well as the usual spelling practise this week the children have been working hard to try and learn the “tricky words” would, could and should.
I hope primary two has a lovely weekend.
Friday 12th November Primary two have worked hard this week in our IDEA. They have been writing a story about imagining themselves as a polar bear. The children created a plan and then went on to write some very interesting stories about how they would feel going out into the freezing cold snow. Penguin pictures were created using cold colours after finding out there are lots of different types of penguin. The children were much amused to find out that there are Macaroni penguins! In Expressive Arts the children worked really hard to create penguin movements and snowflake dances. Thank you for all the items that have come in from home to add to the display and the role play area. We have been practising left and right, turning clockwise and anti clockwise and taking half and quarter turns. They have been making a treasure map and will continue to develop this by giving instructions to a partner to find the treasure. In Sciences the children are investigating properties of materials and have been having fun using the interactive whiteboard and sorting activities to learn about this.
Have a good weekend!
Thursday 4th November
Once again the children are approaching our “idea” (topic) with enthusiasm. This term we are looking at COLD LANDS and will be focussing on Literacy and English, Sciences and Expressive Arts. Lots of children have already brought in Polar animals to show and have added them to the display. Sam has been busy making a super penguin and finding out lots of facts about Alaska. They really enjoy sharing things with the rest of the class. We have been busy thinking of words for our vocabulary bank and finding out about how snow is made. In the Sciences element of the IDEA we have been investigating materials and their properties. The children have made lovely drawings of people wearing appropriate clothing for cold weather. Primary two have gym on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and music with the music specialist on Monday. Spelling homework will normally be given on a Wednesday and there will be a spelling test on the following Wednesday. The children have been discussing how to stay safe around fireworks. Now all we need is a dry night.
Have a happy and safe 5th of November.
Friday 8th Octobober
This week in literacy we have been concentrating on sentence structure. The children are trying very hard to remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and finish each sentence with a full stop. The yellow reading group have been practising reading poetry this week and they are keen to read their favourite poem for everyone next week.
In maths this week the children have been practising telling the time using hours and half hours. I have spoken to the children about making a paper or card clock and some of them are keen to have this as a little homework task. The children could make an analogue clock by writing the numbers onto a piece of card and adding hands. If you have a little time to spare this weekend it would be great to see lots of different clocks next week (it can be as simple or elaborate as the children would like to make it but the classroom probably can’t hold too many grandfather clocks!)
In IDEA this week the children have completed their super accounts of the African journey and written a postcard to their friends and family at home. They have also been colour mixing a hot colours background ready to apply an African animal or person next week.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at parent consultations. Have a good weekend.

PC Smith came into school on Thursday morning to talk to the children about bullying. It was called “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me”. This talk empahasised that there are people who can help if the children are upset or hurt physically or emotionally. The children were beautifully behaved for PC Smith, asked very relevant questions and were very mature in their responses to his questions. Having said that, the children were very keen to try out the handcuffs!
In literacy the children have been learning about “wow” words. Words which will make their story writing more exciting. If you would like to help then you could ask your child to give you a “wow” word to describe something.
Have a good weekend everyone.

They will be continuing the social studies aspect of our IDEA by observing the weather, looking at weather forecasts and recording information on their weather charts.
In technologies the children have been practising typing a sentence. They will continue to explore the keyboards next week.
I’m not sure if the children have shared the fact that library day is on Thursday. Please return books on this day.
Finally, I hope that all the children and their families enjoy the long weekend.
Friday 10th September
The children have been busy making tickets and passports for our imaginary journey. We are almost ready to pack our suitcase and fly off to some sunshine. This week the children have designed an item to take with them. Some children have decided to make a model camera, some have decided to make flip flops, some have dedcided to make tee shirts and other wonderful ideas. If possible please could you send in spare boxes and kitchen roll tubes. The children were extremely good at sharing their ideas with their class mates and recording their ideas on paper. Well done everyone.
The children also did very well at suggesting ideas for planning and designing a weather chart to compare the African climate with the Scottish climate. They will be working in groups to make the charts next week.
Have a good weekend everyone. Let’s hope the sun shines!
Tuesday 7th September
In our Africa Topic the children have been getting ready by making a “TO DO” list. They included all the things they would need to do before they went on an imaginary journey to Kenya. For example getting tickets, a passport, money and a suitcase. Next week the children will explore writing by making a passport and a ticket. The children are enjoying bringing in items from home to share with the rest of the class. Thank you to parents/carers for allowing them to bring them in. Art and Design has involved the children in using hot colours to create a backdrop for the Learning Wall display.
