Reading in Forth Grade

How does reading compare in the classrooms of Sandy Ridge Elementary and Law Primary school?

We have just finished a unit on Historical Fiction. Texts that we read included Ruby Bridges, Rose Blanche, Pink and Say and Clara`s Freedom Quilt. All of which focus on important issues in history e.g holocaust and World War II, Slavery, Civil Rights and Civil War. The focus has been on comparing different texts on the same theme, characters and how they think, feel and act in response to key events and what this tells us about them. Telling a story from a different perspective, focusing on the who, what, why, when where of a story, and the setting, finding evidence in the text of the particular period in time, including language used. Picture books are used to discuss lots of deeper issues and then   children go and read their chapter books focusing on the same issues in their own texts.

Invention Convention Stateside!

Forth Grade embraced the long tradition in primary 6 of the Invention Convention. They have been learning about magnets and electrical circuits in Science and had to apply their learning to design inventions, which would make today’s lifestyle easier. They had to include schematic diagrams to show how their invention worked using buzzers, bulbs or motors.

They also collated data and created a graph to show which were the most popular inventions. The top three included a Snow Dome – as there is very little snow here and the children wish there was, a Home to Go invention which allows you to pack up your home and take it with you when you travel, and also a chore robot who does all your chores for you. A futuristic Teleporter phone gadget was also very popular.

Other inventions included a ruler that lights up so you can find it easily, a massage pencil, a mobile lunchbox, Blinginator., Flying TV, Pollution Sucker, Lake Filter, Jet Boots and Everlasting battery.

Scottish High Tea

Last Friday 8th February, all the fourth grade teachers had High Tea with a Scottish twist, along with a very select group of 7 pupils. This was a prize offered at the Winterfest in December and it lasted an hour in Mrs Macniven`s room, where traditional foods were enjoyed, along with  Scottish themed games and an impromptu dance performance by Mrs Macniven and two of the pupils in her class. The pupils also selected appropriate head wear for all of the teachers to wear to mark the occasion.

Superbowl Mania! Go Ravens!

So why is the Superbowl so huge in the USA? Click the image to find out more…

Hi there I am Alex Laughlin and I am going to try and explain. The game is American football, they play every Sunday and sometimes on Mondays. the rules are similar to rugby but the players wear pads and guards to protect themselves. When it goes out of bounds we don`t throw it in ,the clock stops and the team who had the ball, still as the ball, unless it was 4th down….it gets complicated…sorry!

Rodger Gidell owns the NFL – National football league. He made it, he bought it, he made the rules. There are 32 teams, not all states take part. I do not know why they all do not have a team. the best teams are the Patriots from New England, the Ravens from Baltimore, the Steelers from Pittsburg and the San Francisco 49ers.

To get to the Superbowl, there are 7 teams in each division, they compete in the play offs. If a team loses they are out. The winners go to to Superbowl. It is kind of like your football division games.

This year it was the Ravens against the 49`ers and the Ravens won 31:34. It was kind of a good game. My team is the Panthers as they are from Carolina…but they are not very good:( The Superbowl started at 6pm on Sunday night 3rd February and ended at 8pm. There are 15 minute quarters, counting commercial breaks and time outs.

The Superbowl is a HUGE thing here, we have HUGE parties in our houses and get togethers. My grandparents were here so we ordered pizza. Not a lot of kids can watch a whole game though because it is school night! I watched till half time when the singer Beyonze sang and there was a big fancy show!.

So that was the Superbowl this year and it was XLVII – we use roman numerals because it has been going for a long time. Now we have to wait till next year!
