In 4th Grade we have just completed a Poetry unit in reading and writing and as part of this we wrote poems with a Scottish theme to show our learning about Scotland. We also used the poetic forms and techniques we learned about in class too.
We hope you enjoy them and please let us know what you think.

A SCOTISH KING
Born on July 11 1274
In a place as dark as night
No one knows where
But it was done by candlelight
Became king
As fast as light
Like lightning lighting the sky
He is a sword
Fighting in the night
To win Scotland’s freedom
Swoosh and clang goes the swords
In the battles that they fought
The swords swinging
Like fighting arms
Blood flying
And the smell of fear
Died on June 7 1329
At Cardross Argyll
A Scottish king
Who got Scotland’s freedom!
Written by Matt Hamilton October 2013
Posing for the Camera
Lurking in the lonely Loch
Popping up her head
Deep down under
Staying in her bed
Waiting for her prey
Looking out for hunters
Posing for the camera
She is a Scottish folktale
Making a whirl pool
Waiting for her next movie
Looking at the beautiful view
Some people spot her and yell “Nessie”
Click Click they take a pic
She is a star to the Scots
Some people believe, some people don’t
What do you think?

The Loch is where he Shall Rest
In the deepest loch in the world,
Is where he shall rest.
Is he our foe?
Or is he our friend?
Myth or fact?
Nobody knows.
Log or monster?
Is there one,
Or is there more?
Taking pictures fake or real,
Scaring people half to death.
He is like a monster,
He is a dinosaur.
ROAR!
Goes his booming voice.
Super, scary, scenes of watching fakes of him on TV.
Does he bite?
Or is he just a fright?
In the deepest loch in the world,
Is where he shall rest.
William Wallace
As brave as a knight
As loyal as a president
He has no freight
Scotland’s freedom fighter
“Cling, clang, slice,” goes his claymore
Roaring like a panther
Trampling solders
His shiny claymore looks at him before battle
Scotland’s freedom fighter
Wonderful warrior Wallace
Getting the job done
Scotland’s bravest warrior

i like your poem its cool!
So bold and bright
As I can see the beutifal
Flag makes history
The flag is my heart
It’s a beauty of art
The white and the blue represents
Me and you
You stand before your flag like it’s your
King or queen
You look at it as if
It made seen
Bang flash the flag
Will go
It will do this
Rain or snow
It brought them good
Luck throw out
The fight
They would fight the war for freedom at last
When they won it was a blast
Hanging on a pole it
Will do the flag will
Always watch
Over you!!
So bold and as bright
I can see the beautiful
Flag makes history
The flag is my heart
It’s a beauty of art
The white and blue
Represents me and you
You stand before your flag
Like it your king or queen.
You look at it as if it made a scene
Bang flash the flag will go it will do this threw rain or snow.
It brought them good luck threw out the
Fight
It did that for them all night and they would
Fight for out the fight freedom at last.
When they won it was a blast.
Hanging on a pole the flag will do the flag will always watch over you!
TITLE:BOLD HIGHLAND GAMES
Strong men …..
Prepare to do their best
Caber standing strong and proud
The drums beat and bagpipes sing
Strong men …..
In a monsterous cage
Dusting their hands preparing to spin the hammer
BOUNCE BANG BAM it drops in the dusty ground
Strong men …..
Long kilts of different country’s and clans
Giants is what they are
Strong men …..
Scared yet proud
Sweating to the ground
Hoping to win the round
Oh strong men …..
Daring to do the bold highland games

Nessie
The snake is called Nessie
He can be messy
He live in loch were the sun can’t say hi
Green slimy, slippery snake
He lurked the loch no one knows
Myth or not
Eating seaweed and other sea critters
Searing for its next victim…..
Eyes like diamonds
Teeth like razors
When then sun fades away
He seeks out a fish…….. ‘Chomp”
A Mysterious Night.
Water splashing
Hunters watch
They see a movement

EDINBURGH MILITARY TATTOO
Drinking from a quake,
Is a very special person.
No one dares to speak,
Not even one little peep.
Men in suits and kilts,
Come out of the charming, cobblestone castle.
The bagpipes scream,
While the drums get hit.
Marching in sync,
Looking like brothers.
Men in blood red suits,
With hats as black as night.
The highland dancers dance,
And prance.
Jumping up and down,
Like kangaroos
Many different countries,
With many different men.
They all play there in their own instruments,
While singing their own songs.
The last thing you here is music,
And the cheers of thousands of people.
Is Nessie real or not
Lurked in the night
Lives in the loch were the sun can’t say hi
No one ever saw it because……………………..
It’s as big as a giant
As invisible as a secret
“but, that’s not all”
It is as green as an alien`s brain
It’s always at the bottom of the loch
Is it true or not people don’t know?
It eats fish and squid all day long
People say that he has eyes like crystal
“but, that’s not all”
Protecting his life
Feeding on prey
It’s as slimy as a booger
Swims as fast as a kite
Smelling your blood a mile away
“but, that’s not all”
It has teeth that are knives “chomp”
Hiding from people who hunt
But, it’s a slippery, slimy sea monster that lives in the water.
“And that is all”

NESSIE
In the deepest loch of Scotland is where he shall rest,
Is he our friend or our foe?
Myth or fact nobody knows,
Log or monster,
Is there one or is there more,
Taking pictures fake or real,
Super slimey scales,
Scaring people half to death,
He is a monster,
Big as a dragon,
ROAR
Is the sound he makes as people run and scream,
In the deepest loch of Scotland is where is
where he shall rest,
fish trying to negotiate but doesn’t work,
Does he bite or is he just a fright,
In the deepest loch of Scotland is where you shall rest.
17 loyal years this rare animal lived
17 loyal years you lived
Auld Jock and Bobby…
Are 2 peas in a pod
Fluffy with a smile
You had no trial
Like William Wallace did
Went to the coffee shop at 1:00
And the kirk grave yard
At night
As sweet as candy
Well known in Scotland
Roof arf bark
Auld Jock you died
With a bad cough but…
Bobby you stayed by his grave
A big gray stone you see
With no Auld Jock near
You’re a rare animal
Your cute, confused, and corsages
Saying where are you
Excited, determined, and disappointed
You were there for 16 years
Than died
People buried you secretly
BOBBY
You stand strong
We will admire you forever
And never ever
Forgotten, you
Will always be remembered
OH CLAYMRE OH CLAYMORE
OH MAGICAL CLAYMORE
SHINY SILVER SWORD
GIGANTIC
SMOOTH METAL
SHARP AS A SHARKS TEETH
AND IF IT STABBED YOU
IT WILL MAKE YOU GREET
SLICING DEATH AND BLOOD
THE SWORD CAN GRASP DOWN ON YOU
BOOM CRASH BOOM CRASH IT GOES
IT SMELLS THE FEAR ON YOUR SKIN
THE CLAYMORE IS A BIG KILLING MACHINE
THE STRONG SMOOTH SKILLS OF THE SWORD
OH CLAYMORE OH CLAYMORE OH MAGICAL
So Sweet and Loyal
17 loyal years he lived
Auld Jock and Bobby……
Like two peas in a pod
Fluffy with a smile
You had no trial
Like
William Wallace
All the cold weather
Auld Jock died
Bobby said where are you?
He would stand tall
For 16 long brave years
Next to Auld Jock`s grave
They secretly bury
You next to your owners
Grave
When you die
They built a monument
Of bobby
He was as sweet as candy
Yes Yes he was
Who could find a dog
Like you
You were
Just so sweet and Loyal

ROBERT THE BRUCE By Matt
Robert The Bruce was born on july 11 1274. No one knows where he was born but they think it was Turnberry castle. As a boy Robert learned duelling, hunting, archery, and horse riding. As a boy he spent his life in England and Scotland.
Robert was also sent to a foster family. This showed that you could trust another clan. Robert learned about 5 languages. Shortly after that the king had died and there was no one to take the throne. But there are two people that can, Bruce’s father and Bouniol. Now we need to know who won. You’d think its Bruce’s father but…NO! It’s Bouniol!
A few months later Robert wanted to see his friend Comyn, on February 10 . Out of all the places they chose a church, in fact Greyfriars Church in Dumfries. Now out of all the things Robert could do, he got out a dagger and murdered Comyn.Later he was on trial.
The jury said that he should be guilty, but Roberts lawyer probably said: “Robert did not kill Comyn on purpose your honor, he accidently did because of a fight so he’s NOT GUILTY.”
Now with Comyn dead, and Bouniol dropped the throne, Robert had 2 obstacles done. But like any other person he wanted the throne! And with his wish come true,Robert fought for freedom. His First battles (and battles later on) were with the friends of dead Comyn and Bouniol.
After they were dealt with Robert went northward, got an army of 4,500 men and fought the Brits. However,Valence at perth with 6,000 men. The townspeople let Valence ride on through. Right there and then Robert popped up to capture the town from the Brits. Valence agreed to fight in the morning but to Roberts surprise Valence snuck up and. . .
killed half of Roberts men but some of them (including Bruce) survived.
A year or so later Robert was in a island cave when he saw a spider. The spider spun her web 6 or 7 times in till she got it right. Then Bruce thought, I shouldn’t give up! I should try try try! So lets skip ahead a few years.(And the writing in paragraphs.)
