An arts project linking schools across the Commonwealth
The Millennium Tapestry Company, which is a not-for-profit organization that runs arts projects for schools in Britain and overseas. Were set up in 1998 to organize the Millennium Tapestry for schools around Britain. One school in East Lothian, Longniddry Primary School took part in the second project, the Golden Tapestry created for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, which involved 800 schools in 48 Commonwealth countries and territories including 25 from Scotland. As you can see from the attached photograph, the work from Longniddry was wonderful. Since then we have run further projects including the Thames Heritage Tapestry, which was part of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics Cultural Festival and was awarded the Inspire Mark.
We have been invited to bring a small display of the Golden Tapestry to the Scottish Learning Festival in September this year at the SECC with the intention to inspire teachers in Scottish schools to take part in a brand-new tapestry to welcome the world to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games as part of their cultural festival. We understand that Glasgow 2014 will work to have the tapestry as a permanent display in the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh after the Games.
We are looking for perhaps 96 schools in Scotland to create work to add to the work from a similar number of canvases created around the Commonwealth for the Golden Tapestry. For this we have the backing in principle of both Glasgow 2014 and Education Scotland. We should very much like schools from East Lothian to take part and to give the opportunity to a new generation of pupils.
