Outdoor Learning Continuing Professional Development Courses for the 13/14 terms are now available for booking.
Why not get yourself upgraded and sign up on one of the many East Lothian Council Outdoor Learning Service CPD courses and programmes available to enhance your Outdoor Learning.
As with previous years in 2013/14 there are many opportunities to develop your skills, train for a National Governing Body award or raise your awareness in a variety of Outdoor Learning contexts. These courses also support the delivery of the curriculum for excellence outdoors.
These CPD courses are all run by qualified Outdoor Learning professionals and will get you confident, qualified and aware of how Outdoor Learning can enhance learning for you, your class pupils, your school or community.

The Outdoor Learning Service hosts short sessions (half day or less) at a number of venues throughout the county available to all primary schools. This years Primary Outdoor Learning Days have been very much in demand. Thanks to all again for participating in these successful days.

This is a residential course (bunkhouse) based in the Northern Cairngorms. This course covers fundamental skills for safe hillwalking in the Scottish hills in winter conditions. Snowcraft skills covered include navigation snowpack analysis; moving on snow and ice; crampon use; emergency shelters; snowperson building and making snow angels!
The cost covers all transport (from and to Musselburgh, food, accommodation, equipment, and instruction for the weekend. (cost ELC Staff £80.00, Non ELC £120.00) Course departs 4pm on Friday 1st and returns 7pm Sunday 3rd March.

Some spaces available on this introduction to climbing indoors course. Running over 3 sessions basesd at Tranent and then some options to venture a bit further to Alien Rock and EICA at Ratho. (entry fees will apply) . This course will help you develop your your skills, and confidence in using indoor climbing walls

Two courses for those interested in organising and assessing Duke of Edinburgh award courses in East Lothian will be run in January 2013. Courses will be based at the East Lothian Council Outdoor Learning Service. These DofE accredited courses are essential learning for those embarking on D of E programmes.
Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Supervisor training, Thursday 17th January 2013, 09.30am – 3.30pm
Aimed at ELC staff and volunteers. This course covers understanding the role of the Expedition Supervisor, Assessor and other adults involved in the delivery of the Expedition section. Attendance will develop Expedition Supervisors with an understanding and consistent interpretation of their role and responsibilities within the DofE, ensuring a high quality expedition experience for all young people.
Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Assessor training, Wednesday 30th January 2013, 09.30am – 3.30pm
For ELC staff and volunteers. This course provides the opportunity for new Expedition Assessors to have their training, skills and learning accredited by the DofE and nationally recognised. The programme has been designed to provide Expedition Assessors with a clear and consistent understanding of their role and responsibilities.

The Primary Outdoor Learning days so far have been well subscribed. These additional days on top of outdoor school provision already provided by the service are designed to encourage schools to get pupils involved in outdoor learning. So far a very successful year ;
- 440 pupils have attended the Paddlesport Sessions and taken part in Paddlepoower Start Awards
- 125 Pupils attending the Climbing/Indoor Climbing sessions
- 700 Pupils attending Orienteering sessions around East Lothian
These free sessions, staffed by ELC Outdoor Learning Service Teachers build pupils skills in these activities as well as the generic skills and benefits from engaging in experiential and outdoor learning . The sessions also benefit pupils and schools by providing further opportunities to enhance delivery of the core capacities of the Curriculum for Excellence through Outdoor Learning.

The final Outdoor Learning Challenge of this season is on Friday the 7th December 2012. So far this year, teams from Knox Academy have been successful in bringing home the trophies for all the events. Congratulations to Knox and to all school teams for their amazing efforts so far . The S6 challenge will be your school’s opportunity to prevent a Knox 2012 Grand Slam!

CATI : Indoor Climbing Friday 30th November 2012 -1330-1700
Part of a programme of free courses open to all council staff. Primarily targeted at council staff who work with young people. These mini adventures will give confidence and ideas to encourage young people into ever more activity and potentially integrate these activities into a learning programme and support the Curriculum for Excellence outcomes & capacities.

Course will be based at the Tranent Climbing Wall
On the 29th September 2012 as an SCA approved centre East Lothian Council Outdoor Learning we will be offering some sessions for anyone in the community to try canoeing as part of the SCA Go Canoeing initiative.
Sessions cost £15 per person. No previous experience is required, all equipment will be provided. Adults and children are welcome , with a minimum age of 9 (accompanied by adult).
Go Canoeing is a fantastic way to get active and experience what the great Scottish outdoors has to offer. The sessions aim to inspire people to explore paddlesports and encourage more people onto the water. The sessions are suitable for any ability – from complete beginners to experienced paddlers, and are open to adults, children and families. Come along and give paddlesports a go!
