Our Outdoor learning colleagues in Midlothian are hosting a fantastic opportunity to share practice in Outdoor Learning on the 17th march 2012. They have invited participants from East Lothian to join the event.
The Good Practice Gathering in Outdoor Learning takes place at Beeslack CHS and offers workshops, market place and an ‘expert’ panel. Participants will leave with fresh ideas, many resources and access to a support network.
If you have an interest in developing and delivering outdoor learning within your school or community , this is a great opportunity to hear from a range of professional practitioners and share good practice in developing approaches to Outdoor Learning and CfE outcomes.

Mildothian Good Practice in Outdoor Learning Event

Move your mountaineering skills up a notch with the Outdoor Learning Service., or just have a first time go at Winter Hillwalking. The weekend includes Snow-craft skills include snowpack analysis, moving on snow and ice, crampon and ice axe use, emergency shelters and of course making snow angels. It’s a residential course based in the Northern Cairngorms.

Why not reach higher on over 3 Friday evening sessions to get you up to speed with indoor rock climbing whether you are a novice or would like to develop your current skills. This Adult course for East Lothian Council Staff is a great way to start the weekend. All instruction is free on this course using the East Lothian Tranent Climbing Wall with an option to progress to another wall for session 3.

This course is aimed at East Lothian Employees who wish to develop there navigation skills or employees who are currently leading school and community groups It is designed to help enhance navigation skills for everyone venturing into the hills and develop confidence in those leading groups. Working at night in poor visibility can really develop map,compass,pacing and leadership skills.
Using East Lothian venues this evening course will boost your overall navigation confidence.

As part of our series of CATI (come and try it) sessions, this Friday the Outdoor Learning Service are running a Gorge Walk. These sessions are a great opportunity to try out many of the adventurous activities that the service offers and that can be delivered to pupils and staff across the East Lothian learning community.
Time to try out, discuss learning outcomes and how these activities can link and support the delivery of The Curriculum for Excellence and yes you can develop some personal skills too.

East Lothian Council Outdoor Learning Service
Outdoor Learning Service are running a series of free come and try it watersports lunchtime sessions for ELC staff based in Haddington. Dates are;

Wednesday 31st August 1200-1430
These sessions are free for all ELC staff but we’d be happy to accept a donation for charity or a community project of your choice. We supply all the kit but a towel and a baselayer change could be useful. So come along and have a slightly different lunch-time experience, on the River Tyne- Look for the Outdoor Learning Service Flags.
Meeting point is on the banks of Tyne by the Peter Potter Gallery.
Come along and give it a try – or if you just want to chat about watersports pop along for a blether and find out how you can get involved in paddlesports.

There is still time for East Lothian Primary Pupils to find themselves. A few sessions left in the free Orienteering 2011/12 Primary Outdoor Learning Days are still up for grabs. Point your pupils in the right direction with a chance to work on map and team skills and develop some confident individuals along the way. Why not bring your whole class along?
