Family Activity Day

Free, some activities may incur a small fee 

 Bring the whole family along to this fun-filled day of activities. This year, become a Nature Detective with the Ranger Service, learn outdoor skills with Borders Search and Rescue Unit, undertake an Orienteering course, join the Libraries, or get hands on with Archaeology Scotland. Plus play outdoor games, meet the Fire Service, or book in advance for kayaking. Bookings for kayaking open 23rd August via 0131 653 2904

 There will also be drama games, storytellers roaming around the museum and, arts and crafts sessions!

Battle of Prestonpans Family Day, Saturday 1st June

Come along to our fun event this weekend at Prestongrange Museum

Saturday 1st June, 12 noon – 4pm

Battle of Prestonpans Family Day

Step back in time to 1745 to join the Jacobite camp as it prepares for the Battle of Prestonpans. Hear the stories, watch the soldiers practise with their weapons and find out how they lived with the Alan Breck Regiment. This year, guns will be fired and weapons drawn as government troops storm the camp! There will also be Jacobite arts and crafts for families. Expect loud noises and gunfire!

2pm – Meet the Soldiers talk outside the Visitor Centre

All welcome, drop in to take part. Suggested donation £2 per family. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

What would John have played with as a boy? Find out in this fun workshop! We’ll have quoits, marbles, slates, hopscotch and more for children to discover. Take part in our fortnightly workshops for children aged 5-11 which feature stories, crafts, games and activities. Book by phoning 01368 865899 or by visiting John Muir’s Birthplace. Our Friday workshops are popular, so booking beforehand is essential.

Walk around Historic Dunbar

Meet at Dunbar Town House


£2 per adult, suggested donation

See a different side to Dunbar on a guided tour by Dunbar and District History Society for adults. This tour will reveal the history beneath your feet, and in the landscape around you. Please bring a torch with you! The walk will end in Dunbar Town House for visitors wishing to find out more about the town and this important building.

Booking beforehand is essential. Book at the museum or by phoning 01368 866030.


Discover Treasures by Twilight

A fantastic behind-the-scenes experience as we open the Centre for unique evening, just for adults. The evening will feature live music, refreshments, a chance to get creative in the Star Room, object handling sessions and the chance to see some treasured objects from the museum and archive stores.

Join a Countryside Ranger to find the creatures that come out at night! Includes a walk around Prestongrange in the dark, so remember to bring your torch. Booking beforehand is essential as this event will be a sell out! Book on or 0131 653 2904.

Come along to our museums at night to discover the hidden stories and adventures that lurk behind the displays. At the John Gray Centre, families will go on a story quest with characters coming to life, clues to find, and riddles to solve. In John Muir’s Birthplace, families will discover some of Muir’s favourite stories and be challenged to solve a Muir mystery!

 Come on a journey with 2 museum security guards as they awaken a mysterious object which transports them back to the 12th century. The guard find themselves having to help a Scottish soldier on a quest, with a local Arabic inventor, to deliver a letter to Richard the Lionheart! Suitable for children aged 7 and over, young adults, families and adults. Includes sword fights, explosions, jokes, and even a song about inventions! An experience not to be missed. Only 15 tickets per performance as the audience join the show on their adventure around the building. £3 per ticket, from John Muir’s Birthplace (01368 865 899) or the Brunton Theatre (0131 665 2240)

FREE science workshops on Medieval Construction for EL Schools – book quickly!

East Lothian schools have the opportunity to take part in FREE science workshops about how castles and churches were built! Run by Historic Scotland at both Dirleton Castle and Seton Collegiate Church, these sessions are suitable for P4-7 pupils, last 70 minutes and take place on the following dates:
