MAKE Summer School – a fun and creative way to spend your summer holiday.

MAKE run a creative summer school that teaches children aged 8 to 14 woodwork and other engineering/teamwork skills.  MAKE have been running this project since 2012 and in response to pupil and parental feedback have started a summer school in North Berwick (many children have travelled from East Lothian to Edinburgh over the past three years). We will be be employing teachers from the region as well as current pupils from North Berwick High School to help run the event.

Scotland’s BIG Nature Festival 2015

Scotland’s BIG nature festival is back 23-24 May, Levenhall Links, Musselburgh! There’s loads to keep wildlife lovers and families entertained all weekend. This  award-winning festival has gone from strength to strength – boasting a packed programme covering everything from specialist wildlife talks, walks and demos,  loads of children’s activities like storytelling, puppet shows, bug bioblitz, pond dipping, willow weaving and loads more ways to give your intrepid wildlife explorers a really wild day out!   

This year RSPB has teamed up with East Lothian Council and have a fantastic new venue, renown for its open spaces and wildlife, overlooking the Firth of Forth and part of the John Muir Way. Over 100 exhibitors offer something for everybody, from the latest wildlife technology, fantastic science, art, books, and much more.

North Light Arts will deliver the ‘Fertile Ground Conference’ on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October in Dunbar, East Lothian, with the aim of creating a space to nurture a conversation exploring creative ways to engage communities in the potential for change through public art with an environmental agenda.

Speakers include: Chris Fremantle of Eco Arts Scotland; Matthew Dalziel of Dalziel + Scullion; Judy Spark of Grays School of Art; Natalie Walton, Head of Education, Hepworth Wakefield and Matt Baker of The Environmental Art Festival Scotland. There will also be artists presentations from Robbie Coleman, Jo Hodges, Emma Herman-Smith, Hannah Imlach, Karen Gabbitas, Akshaya Narsimhan and Diandra Saginatari.

Creative Scotland, East Lothian Council and Scottish Natural Heritage have provided funding to enable North Light Arts to deliver this conference which aims to cultivate a fertile ground in which to discover the unique potential of our locality through engaging artists, environmental visionaries, science specialists and local organisations, developing an active process of dialogue, debate and cross pollination.

John Muir Festival – sketch competition

John Muir was not only an inventor, conservationist and author he was also a very accomplished artist who sketched the great outdoors.

To celebrate the John Muir Festival and opening of the John Muir Way we are giving schools the opportunity to win a John Muir—themed class visit at the Scottish Seabird Centre on 22 April 2014 (transport costs included).

To enter the competition: draw a picture using just one pencil on the theme of nature and write one sentence to accompany it. The picture that most captures how it feels to experience and enjoy nature will win the prize.

Community Batonbearers – Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games – Queen’s Baton Relay

 And we’re off!  The online community batonbearer programme was launched on 10 October and will remain open for nominations until 17:00 on 22 November. Members of the public have the opportunity to nominate a deserving individual from their local community to become a batonbearer.
