P4C and the Vicious Vikings!

P4C have had a great time this term learning all about the Vikings. The children have all been really engaged in their learning and have produced some excellent work. They have been able to successfully link their learning with all areas of the curriculum. We have had Drama sessions from a specialist teacher, we have designed our own shields and jewellery and even baked Viking bread. The children are extremely proud of all the work they have done and have produced a book, showing all their learning. They are really looking forward to showing  their work to their parents and friends on Thursday afternoon,. We hope lots of you will be able to come and see our art displays and maybe even try some Viking bread. I’m sure that all the children will remember their learning for years to come and hopefully teach their families all about the Vicious Vikings!!

Good morning everyone. Hope that you’re all having great fun in the snow and keeping warm and safe.

Here are some snowy day activities to keep you busy.

  • Build a snowman and take a picture of him and send it to dojo. Give your snowman a name and write a story about what it’s like to be a snowman.
  • Write a snowy day haiku. Remember this is a 3 lined poem. (5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables
  • Make some paper snowflakes. Bring them in to school to share later.
  • This is World Book Day. Read your favourite book and share it with someone in your family.
  • Dress up as your favourite book character and send us a picture on dojo.
  • Keep practising your Numeracy skills by playing interactive games. ( woodlands primary or topmarks websites)
  • Make snow bricks by filling a plastic lunch box. Use your bricks to make an igloo or castle.

Remember to take photos. I’d love to see what you’ve all been up to.  Have fun and stay safe.

P4/5 are off to a flying start!

The children in P4/5 have come into school after their holidays with bundles of energy and enthusiasm for learning. Despite coming from five different classes, they have all been getting to know each other well and have started to make some new friends.

Our topic this term is “Space” and we are all very keen to learn more about our Solar System and space travel. Thank you so much to Cameron and Finlay for giving us wonderful 3D models of the planets, they are hanging in the classroom and look amazing. Our challenge now is to make a 3D sun!!!

The children were all very keen to welcome our International Educationalists into our class yesterday and show them what they have been learning about Space. They all answered questions very intelligently and we were so proud of them.

We are also trying really hard to improve our cursive writing with good results and have set ourselves a challenge to have made real progress in this area by Christmas.

In Maths, we have been learning about Symmetry and are soon going to be working with angles. We are continuing Number Counts and are pushing ourselves to work with larger numbers when doing mental calculations.

We are all enjoying the class novel “Granny” by Anthony Horowitz and are going to develop our literacy skills with a Literacy Evolve programme about Space Exploration. Thank you so much to all parents and carers for helping children with their reading homework as they are learning so much about Space through discussions of their books in school.

Keep watching our website for next month’s blog. Hopefully one of the children will write the next one!

Not long until Santa comes!!

4B are working hard to prepare for Christmas. We have made a beautiful wall hanging for the hall that is designed around the carol “It was on a Starry Night”. Everyone had a job to do and we are really proud of our efforts.

In Maths, we are starting to learn our times tables through games and activities. If you want to practise at home, try saying the tables, singing the tables or Google “Woodlands Primary interactive Maths games” or “Topmarks” and there will be lots to keep you busy.

We have been reading some funny poems and are learning how to write our own. We also have been writing Haiku, which is a 3 lined Japanese style of poetry. We all wrote some wonderful poems about lightning and will be trying to produce poems in different styles soon.

Our project this term is “Electricity” and “Product Design”. We have a long list of questions we want to find answers to so we are going to be very busy scientists. Our next job is to learn how to make an electrical circuit. We will be using lights and circuits when we design and make a Christmas decoration. If we turn our lights off, we will be able to see them all shine!

There is so much excitement at school in the run up to Christmas that it is easy to forget things. So remember our Christmas Lunch on Wednesday 9th Dec and our Christmas Party on Wednesday 16th Dec. at 1.30.  You can bring your party clothes to school on that day or go home and get changed at lunchtime.

Keep checking school bags for more information.

P4B has got off to a flying start!

Although we have come together from different classes and different schools, we have all settled in well and have made some new friendships. We are working hard and are enjoying our learning.

Our class novel at the moment is Charlotte’s Web and we are loving listening to a new part of the story each day. This novel is all about friendship and caring for each other so it helps us to think about how we can all get along well and enjoy each others company in class. Thank you so much to Alix for letting us watch parts of the story on her DVD.

Our topic is Ancient Egypt and we are finding out lots of interesting facts and asking very intelligent questions.  Thank you too to everyone who has brought in artefacts to show to the class, they have been really amazing. Perhaps you could take your family on a  trip to Chamber Street Museum in Edinburgh one weekend  to find some real mummies!!

Linking our Maths to our topic, we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We are particularly interested in pyramids and are naming shapes, learning their properties and building models to improve our knowledge. Every morning we always start the day with mental maths and we are beginning to improve the speed of our mental calculations in addition and subtraction.
