Welcome to P4A

We have had a really busy start to the year.

In Maths we have been adding ten and multiples of 10. We have also been rounding to the nearest 10 and 100. We have played lots of games to help us learn.

We have been writing diary entries and creating eye catching posters to advertise castles and houses in East Lothian for tourists.

In Social Subjects we have been learning about East Lothian. We have been finding out what jobs people did in the coal mines. If we were alive in the 1800s we would not be at school but would probably be trappers in a mine. We are all looking forward to our trip to the Mining Museum next week.

Thank you for reading and keep checking back for regular updates.

P4A

P4A has had a busy couple of weeks since the February break. We have been practicing working as a good team in our co-operative learning groups, and thinking about how we can show respect to each other. We have been writing leaflets about healthy eating and we made our own challenges for keeping healthy.  We put these on our Respect posters, because it is also important for us to show self-respect by looking after ourselves.  In RME we have been looking at Bible stories (Jonah and the Whale, The Good Samaritan) and thinking about how love was shown in the stories.

An important skill we have been practicing this term is to tell the time in digital and analogue and usage our skills to plan our day. We have filled in our own timelines and we even discovered that we could change our shoes in less than one minute!

In spelling, we have been practicing using pronouns (words that replace nouns), which will improve our writing. In Art we have been illustrators like Quentin Blake this week, drawing pictures of faces to show different expressions.

On the 2nd of March it was World Book Day and we dressed up as book characters and discussed our favourite books.  Don’t forget to spend your World Book Day token!

We’ve also been learning about East Lothian and it was very interesting to look at old maps of Tranent to see how it has changed over the years. We will be learning even more about our local landscape over the next few weeks.

Message from Mrs Atkinson: this was my last week in P4A.  Thank you very much for having me in your class – I have enjoyed seeing all the learning that has been going on!  I hope you enjoy the rest of primary 4!

Happy New Year!

This week we have been learning how to write story openers. We used connectives, exciting adjectives and powerful verbs.  We wrote the story about a picture of a girl under water.  We will post some of them next week.

In Maths, we have been learning to work out equivalent fractions. Equivalent fractions are 2 fractions that have different denominators but are same fraction.

In PE we have been doing gymnastics. We have been learning how to balance on our joints.  It is not that easy because we have to stay still for 5 seconds without falling over.

In Music we have been learning how to play the recorder. It is fun to learn but it is really hard.

We have been going to swimming lessons at the Loch Centre every Friday. We have been playing games in the pool.  Today we were playing tunnel tig.  We had to use our swimming skills and had to hold our breath to swim under water.

We hope you will have a great 2017

P4A Museum

P4A had a Museum in class which featured the models and art work that we had done while learning all about The Egyptians. We learned about how they lived and died and the Afterlife.

We were inspired by our own Models and we had other classes in school come to visit our class Museum.  Mrs Wilson also came along and she was delighted and amazed with the work she was seeing by our class.

We visited P4B and their class Museum too.

In our new topic we are learning about Electricity and we are looking forward to making model circuits soon. We will make electricity and learn all about it.

Each month we do Citizenship .  It Is fun and educational.  We are trying to find out French things  like names of games and songs.

P4A Blog: 13th October 2016

We have had a busy few weeks in P4a.

We enjoyed making models for our Ancient Egypt topic.  A lot of time and effort went into them.  We have been learning about the pyramids and have made powerpoints about Egyptian Gods.

Did you know that the pyramids had hieroglyphics inside to scare people away?  Or that some Gods were part animal?

We have been learning about Growth Mindsets.  Your learning improves my confidence and it’s ok to make mistakes because that’s how you learn.

In maths we have been learning to round numbers to the nearest ten.  Emily found this really easy and Callum has been working hard at it and is feeling more confident.

In PE we have been playing basketball.  We have been using passing and shooting skills.

In Music we have used different instruments to create sounds.  We were introduced to a new instrument called a boomwhacker.  You have to hit it off the ground to make a sound.  We have also been singing an African song.  The words are very strange and don’t change throughout the song.

We hope you will check back to find out more about our learning.

In PE we have been doing basketball and rugby. We worked on our basketball passes and how to communicate in our teams as well.

We were learning about symmetry.  This is when two sides are the same!

Our topic at the moment is Ancient Egypt we made a fact file about the life of Egyptian people and in art we did our names in hieroglyphics.

In spelling we are doing verbs.  A verb is anything you can do. We have also learnt about the past tense and present tens for example jump-jumped.

We also used spelling cards, like 3-D spelling words , fancy words and air writing.

Goodbye from Ruth, Matthew and P4A.

Back to School

Welcome back to school from everyone in P4A.  We have had a busy first 2 weeks learning about Egypt.  We have been learning about the River Nile and made fact-files in writing to show what we had learned.  We have also discovered that the Egyptian civilisation began in 6000BC.  That’s over 8000 years ago!  We have been creating timelines to show how much time has passed since then.

In Maths we have been learning about 3D shapes and their properties.

We have also been doing los of number work:

I have learnt to round to the nearest 10 and 100 – Kyle

I have been using double and near doubles to add – Eva

I have been learning how to split numbers into HTU – Anna

We have been enjoying playing invasion games in PE and learning new skills.

We look forward to sharing more of our learning with you throughout the year.
