July and August 2017

Meadow sweet growing in damp areas of dune grassland – Photo: Abbie Marland

Although there was no scheduled monthly task in July, an ad-hoc session saw a few of us foraging for frogs orchids in the turf nursery area of Yellowcraig.

A good number were found (largely by Abbie!, who I’d also like to thank for the photos) nestling in amongst the wonderful show being put on by the diverse array of flowers and grasses that are found in the meadow. Invertebrates were plentiful also, a highlight being a sexton beetle.

Friends of Yellowcraig reconvened in early August to tackle the overgrowing vegetation on the path leading west in front of Archerfield Estate. It is a pleasure to see this area looking so litter free after the efforts of volunteers from Friends of Yellowcraig, Keep Scotland Beautiful, and the army of regular walkers may of whom muck in to help keep on top of the seemingly endless tides of litter.
