Using Flippers in our spelling

We use Flippers to record words we find tricky to spell.  On one side we write the word very clearly.  On the other we write strategies to help us remember how to spell it.  We use whiteboards to check our spelling each week.

In Sounds group we really enjoy timing each other and trying to beat the time we recorded last week.  We get a special sticker once we have read our sounds/words three times in a row within the time limit.

In the P1/2 and P2/3 Handwriting group we have been drawing horizontal lines.  We had to go from the dot at the start to the dot that said end (left to right).  Some of us found it challenging at the beginning of the session to make sure we followed the dots and stopped at the right point.  We practised and got more and more accurate.

Exceptions to the rule for soft ‘c’

The P4/5 and P5/6 spelling group have been working on soft ‘c’.

They discovered there are some exceptions to the rule.  In these words the ‘c’ does not sound like sssssss even although it is followed by an ‘e’.

soccer

Do you know of any other exceptions to the rule?  Please leave us a comment to let us know 🙂

i can read words with 3 sounds

The P1/2 and P2/3 word building group have been playing a pairs game with 3 letter words.  It was great fun.  When they had finished they tested each other writing the words.

In the P4/5 and P5/6 spelling group we used dictionaries to add words with ‘soft c’ to our lists.  We found lots.  We also found a few words that are exceptions to the rule.  do you know what they are?

In P2/3 we had great fun creating poems using onomatopoeia.  The words on our fireworks recreate real-life experiences by mimicking the sounds the fireworks make. We have made a display of our work on the wall of the Support for learning Base.  Why not pop in and have a look?

When y i or e follow a ‘c’ it is a ‘soft c’. The ‘c’ sounds like a ‘sss’.

For example in ‘dance’ the c sounds like a s because it has e after it.

Do you know the rule about ‘soft c’ when reading or spelling?

The P4/5 and P5/6 spelling group have been investigating……….ask them about it 🙂

They highlighted the ‘c’ in the text, then highlighted the letters that came after the ‘c’ to work out the rule.

Next week they will post what they have discovered here for you to read.
