Building on our partnership with National Youth Choir of Scotland (www.nycos.co.uk) free singing sessions are offered to all East Lothian primary school pupils from P3-P7. Children are given the opportunity to attend a weekly singing session for approx 10 weeks in the Spring and/or Summer term, leading up to a full scale concert at the Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh.

The aim of this project is for young people develop their music and music making skills, and we hope through taking part that they make friends, build teamwork and motor skills, and increase self confidence. Singing has been shown to positively affect mental health and well being, and contributes to higher achievement in other academic subjects.

“It was a really great experience that my child thoroughly enjoyed. We were very impressed by how well all the children did at the concert both in terms of how much they had learned and how well the groups sang together with only one joint rehearsal. It has been great for my daughter’s confidence. Normally she would be quite nervous about public performing but she was right at the front singing confidently to a packed theatre.”

There are six singing groups, each one based in one of the six East Lothian Cluster areas (Haddington, North Berwick, Dunbar, Musselburgh, Tranent and Prestonpans). Groups run for two hours (1 hour for P3/4 groups and 1 hour for P5/6/7 groups) for approx 10 weeks in the Spring/Summer each year. Pupils can attend any one of the sessions which run from Monday to Thursday between 4pm and 6pm.

“I think the NYCoS choir is great – the performance was amazing. (Child) struggled to find something he was in to before he joined NYCoS and I was over the moon when he finally wanted to go to something outside school. He absolutely loved it and wants to do it again. The performance was amazing all the children did so well. I think this has given (child) a confidence boost. Thanks to everyone involved.”
